For their artist talk at Ruby City, Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler will share a special screening of their video installation, House with Pool (2004), which is related to their photographs in the current Water Ways exhibition. Structured as a seamless and suspenseful narrative loop, House with Pool follows a woman as she roams through a house after a party has ended, and a younger woman who covertly enters the same space. Although the women never meet and their relationship remains uncertain, they perform uncannily parallel actions. Precise camera and audio work construct a narrative where the viewer encounters a visual reordering that constitutes the emotional inside as physical outside.
Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler have been working collaboratively since 1990. Their work focuses on the ways in which histories, social life, and memories intersect. They have participated in the 48th as well as the 57th Venice Biennale, where they represented Switzerland in the Swiss Pavilion. Selected solo and group exhibitions include the Giacometti Institute Paris; Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Kunsthaus Graz; Mori Museum Tokyo; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Reina Sofia Museum Madrid; Tate Museum Liverpool and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
Their work is held in numerous public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; Goetz Collection Munich; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian, Washington D. C.; Kunsthaus Zurich; Kunstmuseum Basel; Los Angeles County Museum of Art LACMA; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles MOCA; National Museum of Art Osaka and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. Recently, Hubbard / Birchler’s permanent public video installation, Past Deposits from a Future Yet to Come (2024), commissioned by the Waterloo Greenway, opened at Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, Austin, TX.
