Ruby City is pleased to announce the acquisition of a work by the late Katie Pell (1965-2019), an artist much beloved by the San Antonio arts community. The untitled work a charcoal and pastel drawing on paper with a mirrored frame, is a gift from the private collection of George and Heather Schroeder. The drawing, in Pell’s signature drawing style--fanciful yet realistic--depicts a variety of animals, birds, and plants in black-and-white framing an expanse of blue, cloud-filled sky.
Katie Pell was born and raised in Wilmington, DE., received a BFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design, and an MFA from University of Texas at San Antonio. She moved to San Antonio in 1995, and lived and worked in the city until her death in 2019. She created several works of public art in San Antonio, including ceramic murals for the San Pedro Creek Culture Park, along which Ruby City is located. Her work is the permanent collections of the New Museum, and the San Antonio Museum of Art, and Linda Pace Foundation.
Pell held residencies at Anderson Ranch, Pilchuck Glass School, and Artpace, during which she made her notable installation, Bitchen. Her work Bitchen Stove (2006) is in the Linda Pace Foundation collection. The new acquisition brings the number of works by Pell in the collection to two and represents Pell's work in drawing, an important part of her practice. Pell’s work is also in the collections of New Museum, New York, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Her solo exhibitions include a 2018 exhibition at Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina.
