Cruz Ortiz (b. 1972, Houston, Texas) uses print, performance and film to address issues related to growing up in the bicultural landscape of South Texas. Grounded in the history of art; contemporary art practices; and social, political and cultural movements, Ortiz’s unique language fuses classical icons with symbols of contemporary pop culture. He most recently is working with oil, creating whimsical and brightly colored paintings.  His wife is often his muse, but he also paints friends and faces from old photos he collects. The artwork Jesse Amadois a portrait of San Antonio-based contemporary artist, who was one of the first Artpace residents and a close friend of Linda Pace.
