Laura Aguilar (b. 1959, San Gabriel, California, d. 2018) presents her awareness of the unconventional contours that form her body and naturalizes them for her audience. Placing herself in nature and positioning her body according to postures and mannerisms suggestive of repose and contentment while averting her gaze from the viewer are among the stylistic codes she employs which place her system of representation outside of and in opposition to objectifying images of women. She does not strive to beautify or perfect her subject; instead she pictures them as exposing their humanity and imperfections as important factors in understanding them as subjects.
