SHAHZIA SIKANDER

Shahzia Sikander (b. 1969, Lahore, Pakistan) has been instrumental in the rediscovery, re-infusion and re-contextualization of the Indo-Persian miniature painting. She has pioneered an experimental approach to the genre with a multi-disciplinary practice that radically rearticulates the miniaturist tradition by creating a visual vocabulary that engages contemporary issues of Middle Eastern identity with art-historical references. Working in mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, animation, large-scale installation, performance and video she establishes an aesthetic bridge between two cultures in order to navigate complex and deeply-rooted cultural and sociopolitical stances seen in everyday life. Sikander was an Artpace resident in 2001, and the permanent collection boasts two artworks by the artist including the renowned large-scale video installation Parallax.
